Potrero Hill
Tucked between the Outer Mission, Mission Bay, and the Central Waterfront districts, historic Potrero Hill is a sunny neighborhood located near the eastern outskirts of San Francisco. Named after the Spanish word for ?pasture,? the area is also known for the many docks that are situated along the eastern edge of the neighborhood, all of which were once served by U.S. Navy battleships.
In fact, many of the streets in Potrero Hill, such as Arkansas Street, Connecticut Street, Pennsylvania Street and Rhode Island Street, were named after U.S. Navy battleships. A popular setting for many films and television series (from I Remember Mama in 1948 to The Women?s Murder Club in 2007), Potrero Hill is also the location of many famous film sequences, including part of the immortal chase scene from Bullitt, the opening scenes of Dirty Harry and Magnum Force, and multiple episodes of The Streets of San Francisco.
The Anchor Steam Brewery is located on Mariposa Street, while the popular nightspot Bottom of the Hill is on the corner of 17th Street and Missouri Street. Several streetcars serve the neighborhood, while U.S. 101 and I-280 are both in close proximity.
The recent addition of a Whole Foods Grocery Store has dramatically improved the area giving it an upscale, urban feel. An array of single-family homes, condominiums, and flats dominate the housing landscape throughout Potrero Hill.
