Van Ness / Civic Center
Once a quiet residential neighborhood of mansions, sunny Van Ness Avenue is one of the busiest thoroughfares of San Francisco, running north and south through the city?s core from the Central Freeway and into the northward. The location of San Francisco City Hall, the Opera House, and Davies Symphony Hall, Van Ness is a compelling blend of nightlife and convenience. Large apartment buildings, condominium developments, movie theaters, a wide variety of restaurants, and a host of car dealerships dot the landscape. Toward the northern end, a few blocks of two- and three-story buildings remain. Of these, some have been converted to condominiums while others remain rental apartments. Many bus lines and cabs are a fixture of Van Ness Avenue, while the section of Van Ness between Lombard and Market Streets is officially part of U.S. 101.
