North Beach
Recognized by the American Planning Association as one of ?Ten Great Neighborhoods in America,? North Beach is a colorful hub known for its rich cultural history and Italian-American presence. Featured prominently in such as films and TV series as Dirty Harry and The Streets of San Francisco, it is home to such landmarks as Lawrence Ferlinghetti?s City Lights Bookstore, the Washington Square Bar and Grill, St. Peter and Paul?s Church, a host of nightclubs, including the Purple Onion and Club Fugazi (home of the quintessentially San Francisco musical revue Beach Blanket Babylon), and many restaurants and cafes, including Fior d?Italia, Caffe Trieste and the North Beach Restaurant. Mostly comprised of three-storey buildings painted in light colors, the compact layout of North Beach makes it conducive for walking (not to mention street venues like the annual Columbus Day parade), while the weather is generally sunny after early morning fog.
