The Marina
East of Civic Center and west of the Presidio, the historic Marina District was the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, which celebrated the reemergence of San Francisco after the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906. As part of the original Exposition plan, large sections of The Marina District developed throughout the 1920?s and 1930?s.
Located in one of the warmer spots of the City, it is known for its wide streets, charming homes, and tony shopping along Chestnut Street. Notable landmarks include the Palace of Fine Arts, the Exploratorium science museum, and the Marina Green, a popular grass field where locals often converge to jog, fly kites, soak in the sun or simply imbibe (responsibly, of course!) on lazy weekends.
The Marina Green, its adjacent harbor filled with private sail boats, and St. Francis Yacht Club, also offers spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge, which is directly accessible by way of Lombard Street/U.S. Route 101.
Perhaps because of its scenic views and rich history, the Marina District has often been featured in many films and TV series filmed in San Francisco, including The Enforcer, Foul Play and Tales of the City (where the neighborhood Safeway on Marina and Lombard, long known as a pick-up spot for singles of all orientations, was immortalized).
