North Panhandle
The North Panhandle is a small, L-shaped neighborhood located directly north of The Panhandle, a long, narrow park adjacent to Golden Gate Park (so named because it forms a panhandle with the eastern border of the park) that boasts some of the oldest trees in San Francisco. Once saddled with a seedy reputation because of its proximity to the Panhandle park (a notion that has dramatically changed in recent decades, due in part to safety measures), the neighborhood today is recognized for its vast number of Victorian flats, many of which date back to the 1890s and early 1900s, including a distinguished row of Queen Anne-style houses along Broderick Street in the northeast quadrant of the neighborhood. Bordered by the University of San Francisco, Alamo Square and the Haight Ashbury, it is predominantly populated by single urban professionals, likely on account of its proximity to both downtown as well as the thriving Haight Street and Hayes Valley commercial districts.
