Alamo Square
One of the most photographed areas in all of San Francisco, Alamo Square is an L-shaped residential district sandwiched between Hayes Valley and the Western Addition.
Known for its vast number of Victorian buildings, it is the San Francisco neighborhood with the second-largest concentration (Pacific Heights being the largest) of mansions originally constructed as large as 10,000 square feet and, in some cases, more!
Mostly residential, the area is home to many small businesses, as well as a number of trendy restaurants and bars. But the focal point is Alamo Square Park, a public park that sits on a hill that, on a clear day, offers spectacular views of such city landmarks as City Hall, the Transamerica Pyramid, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay Bridge. The area is also famous for the row of six Victorian houses along Steiner Street that directly face the park. Known as the Painted Ladies(an image of which is included on the homepage of this site), these houses have been featured in many books, photographs, films, commercials and television series, including the opening sequence of the popular 1980s family sitcom Full House. Like the Western Addition, Alamo Square is a diverse mix of young urban professionals, upper middle class homeowners, and older residents. Close to downtown, it is served by a number of bus lines, as well as nearby Van Ness Avenue/U.S. 101.
