Lower Pacific Heights
The Lower Pacific Heights district runs north/south from California Street to Geary Boulevard, and east/west from Gough Street to Presidio Avenue. Once known as the ?upper Fillmore,? the area was a long established middle-class neighborhood of traditional Victorian houses until the late 1980s and early 1990s, when it became increasingly upscale on the heels of rising property values.
Though still mostly residential, Lower Pacific Heights is the location of the City?s Japantown area, where one may find a host of traditional Japanese shops, as well as the Hotel Kabuki, which houses the Japanese Cultural and Trade Center, a Sundance multiplex, and several trendy restaurants and sushi bars. Several bus lines serve the neighborhood, while Van Ness Avenue/U.S. 101 provides access to Marin County by way of the Golden Gate Bridge.
