A J-shaped neighborhood directly north of the
Duboce Triangle, Hayes Valley is bordered roughly by McAllister Street to the
north, Market Street and Duboce Avenue to the south, Gough Street to the east
and Webster and Divisadero Streets to the west. Centered along the bustling
Hayes Street area, it is a diverse mix of high-end restaurants, secondhand
shops, trendy boutiques, public housing complexes and traditional Victorian and
Edwardian townhouse buildings. The Central Freeway once ran through Hayes
Valley, but was torn down after irreparably damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta
earthquake. Though a section of the freeway was reopened in 2005 (in the form
of a boulevard running north from an exit at Market Street through the
neighborhood along Octavia Street to Fell Street), the original path of the
thoroughfare remains dotted with empty lots, many of which are slated for
development of new affordable housing units. City Hall, Davies Symphony Hall,
the San Francisco Opera House and St. Mary?s Cathedral are all nearby. Several
MUNI bus lines serve the area, while U.S. 101/Van Ness Avenue is two blocks to
the east of Gough Street.
