Haight Ashbury
A mecca for hippies during the "Summer of Love," this charming neighborhood west of Golden Gate Park has been forever linked to tie-dye colors, illicit substances, the Monterey Pop Festival (where the Jefferson Airplane and other local bands first came into prominence in 1967), and the tumultuous American counterculture movement of the 1960s. Though things are mellower now, the Haight remains a hub for youth and bohemian thought, as evidenced by the host of independent music, food and clothing stores in the area, as well as the occasional chain (the popular Ben & Jerry's ice cream store at the corner of Haight and Ashbury). Many Victorian houses can be found among the inclines of the Haight, while several major bus lines serve the area.
