Also known as Upper Haight,
this slightly upscale residential area has much of the same community feel as
its notorious neighboring district, the Haight-Ashbury.
Close to the University of San Francisco, Stanyan Street and the southeast
corner of Golden Gate Park, Cole Valley was popular among dot-com professionals
during the 1990s (in fact, Craigslist founder, Craig Newmark, is still known to
frequent the neighborhood.) A variety of housing situations populate the area
including large single-family homes, condominiums, and apartments.Small businesses abound in the area, such as
cafes, restaurants, and grocers, particularly around the Sunset Tunnel, located
at the intersection of Carl and Cole Streets. Cole Valley is serviced by many
bus lines, as well as the N Judah streetcar line, which travels west and
terminates at Ocean Beach.
