West Portal
A cozy neighborhood south of Forest Hill and east of the Inner Parkside, West Portal is among the more unique places to live in San Francisco. Similar to Glen Park (in that its small size, coupled with its blend of neighborhood shops, restaurants, mom-and-pop stores and saloons, lends a ?village-like? feel to the area), it is one of the few residential districts in the City where the lots are actually detached?adding further to the ?small town? vibe. West Portal Avenue is the main hub of the neighborhood, while the West Portal Station serves four Muni Metro underground streetcar lines (the K, the L, the M and the T) that provide direct access to downtown in one direction, and to San Francisco State University, Stonestown Galleria and Stern Grove in the other. Though susceptible to fog during parts of the year, the area immediately above the tunnel of the West Portal Station offers on a clear day spectacular views. Homes vary from the upper-six figures to the mid-seven figures. Most of the homes were constructed between the 1920s and the 1940s reflecting a period when rooms were generously proportioned.
