4h - Miraloma Park

Miraloma Park

Immediately west of Glen Canyon Park and the Diamond Heights district, Miraloma Park is a 2,200-home community known for its stucco and wood-framed single-family homes and distinctive old world feel. Developed over a 30-year period in the early 20th century, on land once owned by legendary San Francisco magnate Adolph Sutro, it offers direct access to many neighborhoods through a number of city buses, not to mention some of the best views in the City.

Once the home of celebrated San Francisco Giants Hall of Fame outfielder Willie Mays, Miraloma Park is also the location of Mount Davidson, the highest natural point in San Francisco (elevation 925 feet), whose most dominant feature is a 103-foot-tall concrete cross that sits on the top of the hill. The site of annual Easter sunrise services, the Mount Davidson cross was immortalized in 1971 when it served as the location for an early yet tense sequence in the Clint Eastwood thriller Dirty Harry. But it has also been an ongoing source of controversy among San Francisco political groups who object to the presence of a religious symbol on public land.
