St. Francis Wood
South of West Portal, and west of Mount Davidson, St. Francis Wood is widely considered one of the finest ?residence park? communities in not only San Francisco, but the entire United States. Quite grand, scenic, and serene, St. Francis Wood is known for its wide streets, spacious lots, pillared entryways and other flights of architectural fancy (some features, such as the two large water fountains along St. Francis Boulevard, evoke images of the gardens of the Italian Renaissance era). Like Forest Hill, it was developed from land originally owned by Adolph Sutro; unlike Forest Hill, it is strictly residential (no businesses whatsoever), making it unique among San Francisco neighborhoods. Many of the streets in St. Francis Wood are named after saints (San Leandro Street, Santa Ana Street, Santa Clara Street, St. Francis Boulevard), prompting some City residents to nickname the area ?the saint district.?
The overall park-like plan was conceived and executed by The Olmstead Brothers? firm. Virtually all of the homes in the development are architect designed and include works by such luminaries as Wills Polk, Julia Morgan, and the firm of Maybeck & Merchant.
The St. Francis Homes Association will be celebrating its centennial in 2011.
