Ingleside Terrace
An affluent neighborhood built in 1910 on the site of a former horse racetrack, Ingleside Terrace is bordered by Ocean Avenue to the north, Holloway Avenue to the south, Ashton Avenue to the east and Junipero Serra Boulevard to the west. Considered by some to be San Francisco?s most fully developed ?residence park,? it is the one of the few non-condominium developments in the City (Forest Hill being another) with an active homeowners association; also like Forest Hill, many properties here date back to the early 1900s, with values ranging from $800,000 to the mid-to-upper $2 millions.
Among the unique landmarks intrinsic to this area is the large sundial on Entrada Court, which itself is surrounded by the oval-shaped Urbano Drive, so shaped because it was once the main raceway for Ingleside Racetrack (the last venue for horse racing in San Francisco, back in the 1890s, and which also served as a refugee camp for San Franciscans after the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906).
The area was essentially constructed in two phases. The first was during the teens and the second during the late 1920?s and into the 1930?s. Driving through Ingleside Terrace, you?ll notice that almost every other house speaks to these respective eras. The first builder left vacant lots between each of his houses, thereby enabling the second builder to create an over-lay development. The early homes have a decided Prairie School aesthetic, while the later homes are more Spanish Colonial revival in style.
Holloway Avenue provides access to Stonestown Galleria and San Francisco State University, while Junipero Serra Boulevard provides access to West Portal to the north and Interstate 280 to the south.
