Forest Hill
Located north of West Portal and southeast of the Inner Sunset, Forest Hill is an elegant, affluent neighborhood known for its winding streets, verdant landscape and imaginative architectural designs, many of which resemble Dutch cottages, French palaces and English hunting lodges. Some properties date as far back as 1914 (two years after the area was first developed, on land that was once owned by noted engineer, entrepreneur and onetime San Francisco mayor Adolph Sutro), including one designed by Bernard Maybeck, the noted architect of the Palace of Fine Arts, as well as the Forest Hill Clubhouse on Magellan Street. Besides its striking country-like atmosphere, Forest Hill is known for its active homeowners association, the fees for which support maintenance of the greenery of the neighborhood?s common areas. Interestingly enough, the ?forest? for which the district is named is entirely man-made (every tree was planted by none other than Sutro himself back in the 1880s).
