Diamond Heights
A hilly, mostly residential neighborhood located south of Twin Parks, west of Noe Valley and north of Glen Park, Diamond Heights marks an important milestone in the modernization of San Francisco. The inaugural project of San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, a nonprofit redevelopment agency formed in 1959 to re-establish San Francisco?s primacy among Bay Area cities, it was the first of several hillside areas in the south-central part of the City where properties were developed with the landscape in mind, rather than against it. Many of the homes in Diamond Heights are single-family tract houses originally designed by architect Joseph Eichler between 1962 and 1964. Ranging in size from 1,629 square feet to 2,020 square feet, most of these houses are two-story or split-level homes with two-to-four bedrooms, two-to-two-and-a-half baths, one-to-two-car garages and, consistent with the indoor/outdoor theme for which Eichler was known, a courtyard. Though turnover in Diamond Heights is traditionally low, sale prices are usually in the high-six- to low-seven-figure range. A shopping center on Diamond Heights Boulevard and Duncan Street serves the area, while several bus lines provide access to the Muni Metro system (and, in some cases, BART by way of the Glen Park Station).
