Lone Mountain
Just south of Laurel
Heights, Lone Mountain
is a mostly residential neighborhood that also surrounds the campus of the University of San Francisco. Bordered by Geary Boulevard to
the north, Arguello Boulevard
to the west, Masonic Avenue
to the east, and Fulton Street
to the south, the area takes its name from a historic hill that was once the
location of several cemeteries, including Lone Mountain
Cemetery, the Odd Fellows
Cemetery, the Masonic Cemetery and the Greek Orthodox
Cemetery. By the 1930s,
however, these cemeteries were all closed due to changes in state law; most of
the 47,000 graves were eventually moved to Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma,
Calif. St. Ignatius Church, adjacent to the USF campus, is located on Stanyan
Street (which in turn provides direct access to St. Mary's Hospital and the
northeast corner of Golden Gate Park), while an extension of the University of
California/San Francisco campus can be found on Fulton Street near Stanyan.
Though prone to the early morning fog and overcast weather typical of the
Richmond District, Lone
Mountain is a generally
sunny area. From its perch atop Fulton
Street, residents can enjoy unobstructed views of
the magnificent City Hall rotunda on Van
Ness Avenue, in the heart of the San Francisco Civic
Center.
