The Richmond District
Tucked away in the northwest corner of the City, the Richmond District is a large, culturally diverse and mostly residential neighborhood located directly north of Golden Gate Park. Both the Richmond District and its neighbor The Sunset District (which flanks Golden Gate Park from the south side) are often known as "The Avenues" because all but three of the 49 streets that run north/south in these two neighborhoods are numbered avenues (what would be 1st Avenue is actually Arguello Boulevard; what would be 13th Avenue is actually Funston Avenue; and what would be 49th Avenue is actually La Playa Street). Because the area is so expansive, some have divided the Richmond into three sections: the "Inner Richmond," the "Central Richmond," and the "Outer Richmond." Here's a look at the Outer Richmond.
Outer Richmond
The Outer Richmond runs east/west from 32nd Avenue to La Playa, and north/south from California Street to Fulton Street. Though mostly residential, it boasts many notable San Francisco landmarks, including the Cliff House restaurant; Seal Rock; the ruins of Sutro Baths; the Great Highway; Lincoln Park; the Palace of the Legion of Honor; the Veterans Administration Hospital on 42nd Avenue and Clement; the recently renovated Balboa Theater on 38th Avenue and Balboa (one of the few old-style San Francisco movie palaces still in operation); and Ocean Beach/The Pacific Ocean, aka the site of the "Breakers" that serves as the west end point for the world-renowned Bay to Breakers, the annual 7.46-mile foot race that runs the length of the City. The proximity to the ocean also makes the Outer Richmond prone to fog and cooler temperatures (which, as natives of the area will tell you, is not always a bad thing!). Traditional Victorian flats and cottages dot much of the neighborhood, while modern condos along La Playa offer spectacular ocean-side views.
